1997, on the Forza Italia ticket, he was elected Councillor of
the eighth Ward, holding the position of Vice-President. In 2003
he stood for election in the second constituency, Central
Palermo, and was elected Councillor of the Palermo Regional
Province. Elected Palermo Town Councillor for the first time in
May 2007 with 1992 votes. |

Born in Prizzi (Palermo) on 6 February 1937. A mathematics
graduate, he is a qualified mathematics and physics teacher. He
has taught applied mathematics at high school level and been
headmaster of the Francesco Ferrara Technical Commercial School
in Palermo, the Bisacquino Technical Commercial School, the
Bagheria Scientific High School, the Fifth Technical Institute
in Palermo, and the Einstein Scientific High School in Palermo.
He retired two years ago. He was President of the Libertà ward
and a Christian Democrat Councillor (1990) for two years, and
then Secretary for the Budget and Local Taxes during the
mayorship of Manlio Orobello. He later joined European Democracy
and then the UDV (Union
of Christian and Centre Democrats). |

Giampiero
CANNELLA

Born in Palermo on 24 June 1965. A professional journalist and
provincial coordinator of Alleanza Nazionale since March 2003.
He was an AN (National Alliance) national deputy in the
fourteenth legislature, member of the Culture Commission, leader
of his party in the Parliamentary Commission that investigated
the deaths of Ilaria Alpi and Miran Hrovatin. He is regional
chief of his party’s Internet and communications office. The
positions he has held include that of Regional Secretary for New
School Buildings in the Province of Palermo, and Secretary of
the New Economy and Computerization in the Municipality of Desio
(Province of Milan). |

Marcello CARUSO

Born in Palermo on 18 May 1961. He is an administrative officer
of Esa (Agriculture Development Agency), where he has held
various position related to public management, agricultural
policies, and dependent activities. From June 2000 to November
2001 he was Provincial Secretary, with responsibility for
Agriculture, Hunting, and Fishing, Civil Defence, and the Former
Mountain Communities. From November 2001 to June 2003 he was a
Palermo Town Councillor, which position he relinquished in order
to become once again Provincial Secretary of Agriculture, with
responsibility also for the Patrimony, Public Land, and
Education.
He is

elections held in May 2007, he was re-elected on the UDC (Christian
Democrats and Centre Democrats Union) ticket with 2026

1990 to 2001, first for the Christian Democrats and then for the
CDU (United Christian Democrats). |

Agriculture, Palermo University. Teaches in the 3-year degree
courses in Biological Agriculture, Viticulture and in the
specialized degree course in Agricultural
Sciences and Technologies (Plant Production Systems Curriculum).
Also at the Faculty of Agriculture, Palermo, she taught in the
Master’s course on "Irrigation in the Mediterranean
Environment" and held cycles of lessons on public parks and
gardens; she was on the Regulatory Committee of the Master’s
Degree in “Biological Production and Quality Control in the
Agriculture and Food Industry”; Member of the Examining Board
for the Doctorate in Environmental Hydronomy; Member of Register
of Auditors of Miur-Cofin (Ministry of Education, University and
Research-Co-Financing) for assessment of research projects;
Member of Board of Experts in the Steering Committee for the
Assessment of Research in Italian Universities. Head of the
Plant Ecophysiology Research Laboratory, Department of Botanical
Sciences, Palermo University (supervision of one Researcher, two
PhD students, and two undergraduate students). She has published
about ninety papers in national and international journals,
recently developing a special interest in arboreal plants and
species of drought-resistant lawn grass and in
pollution-related problems. Member of the Italian Botanical
Society and the Italian Plant Physiology Society. |

Raoul RUSSO

Born in Palermo on 3 March 1971. Engaged in political activity
from a very early age in the “Fronte della gioventù” (Youth
Front”), of which he was provincial secretary and a national
executive. In 1992 he entered the MSI-DN (Italian Social
Movement – National Right Wing) provincial executive and in 1995
he was a party delegate at the Congress held in Fiuggi, where he
was elected a national executive of AN (National Alliance). He
is currently a member of the party’s provincial executive. Twice
elected Palermo Town Councillor. He has been President of the
Town Council Commissions “Production Activities” and “General
Affairs”. Member of national executive of ANCI (National
Association of Italian Communes) and among the founders of the
Nuova Italia (New Italy) association. He held the position of
political counsellor to the Minister of Agricultural Policies in
the previous government. He has long been involved in the world
of voluntary work and nonconformist culture, is an activist in
the environmentalist association “Fare Verde” (“Act Green”), and
actively militates to spread the Church’s “social doctrine”
through the Catholic association “Uomo e Società” (“Man and
Society”). |

Carlo
VIZZINI

Born in Palermo on 28 April 1947. A law graduate, he has been a
university lecturer since 1971 and is the author of numerous
publications. First elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1976,
he has been in various different legislatures Minister of
Cultural and Environmental Resources, Minister of Regional
Affairs, Minister of the Post Office and Telecommunications,
Minister of the Merchant Navy, and Undersecretary of State
Participation and of Economic Planning. After being elected sole
Vice-Secretary of the PSDI (Italian Social Democrat Party) in
1989, he became that party’s national secretary in 1992. In
1998, after a period away from active politics (during which he
founded the Centre of Studies – Political Workshop), he joined
Forza Italia and later became a member of the party’s National
Presidency Committee, of which he is currently Vice-President.
Standing for election in the Forza Italia party, he was elected
Senator in both 2001 and 2006. Among the positions he has held
in the Senate, he has been a member of the standing committees
for the Budget, Antimafia, and Regional Matters and
Constitutional Affairs as well as a member of the parliamentary
commission of inquiry into crime by the Mafia and similar
criminal organizations. He was also elected to the position of
official resident of the Italian delegation to the parliamentary
assembly of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in
Europe (OSCE). |
